The Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Girl's Championships are usually held separately over two different courses. However, this year the Monmouthshire event, due to be held at St Mellons Golf Club, had to postponed because of bad weather. Rather than look for a new venue or try to rearrange the date for this event it was decided to hold both events over the same course on the same day.

In the recent county series Glamorgan Under 14s trounced the team from Gloucestershire. In the morning foursomes Glamorgan took a 4-1 lead with convincing 5&4 victories coming from the pairings Sam Harry & George Griffiths and Max Davies & Oliver Dickson. In the afternoon singles Gloucestershire only managed to secure one and half points. Tim Harry from Vale of Glamorgan had the biggest winning margin. He beat Gloucestershire's Alistair Hunt by 7&5. George Griffiths also had a convincing afternoon win when he beat Curtis Mills by 6&5. Congratulations to Delon Hau, Ryan Thomas, Tim Harry and Sam Harry who all play at Vale of Glamorgan; to Oliver Dickson and George Griffiths- Pennard; to Luc Davies fro Pyle & Kenfig; to Matthew Joseph (Clyne), to Joe Francis (Llantrisant) and to Max Davies from Fairwood Park.

Gwent Golf Union Junior League

The Gwent Golf Union junior leagues are divided into four divisions and include clubs from throughout the county. In each match points awarded for individual games won or halved and bonus points are given for match victories.

On the 29 May the South Wales Boy's Championships were held over the long and demanding fairways of Glyn Abbey Golf Club. The course was prepared in excellent condition and Jack Bush from Morlais Castle deserved to win the Under 15s Category with his excellent score of 74. In second place came Oliver Baker from Ridgeway who beat Ryan Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) with a better back nine. Also taking place was the Under 13s Category. The winner here was Alex Price with a gross 77 nett 69. Tim Harry (Vale of Glamorgan) was second with a gross 80 and in third place was Alex Matthews, also Vale of Glamorgan, who pushed out Otto Mand (Dewstow) with a better back nine. Both players scored gross 86. Joepsh du Feu from Dewstow came fifth after hitting a gross 87.

Coed-y-Mwstwr junior's recent results

In their first game of the season the Coed-y-Mwstwr juniors entertained Clyne and came away with a 2.5 to 1.5 win. The highlight of the day was an eagle from Tom Kelly on the 15th to finish the match in style. Having lost three players to the senior ranks this year the inexperienced side can be proud of their performance.

Trying to find the right person to look after the junior section of any club is not an easy task. So, when Lisa Davies volunteered her services as junior organiser at Fairwood Park they seized the opportunity.

One of the early season major competitions at Woodlake Park has come to close recently. The Masters tournament is a four-round medal competition, and the champion for 2008 is up and coming junior golfer James Lowden. James, who has just turned 17 and now plays off a handicap of 11, won by a convincing margin of 6 shots after carding rounds of (nett) 69, 75, 70, 68 for a total of 282. In second place on 288 (72, 77, 71, 68) was Brian Carpenter, with former champion Dave Phelps one shot further back after a slightly disappointing final round of 75. Those competitors who failed to make the cut after the second round (within ten shots of the leader) played for the Masters Plate over the next two rounds. This year's winner was Richard Blackmore on 146 (77, 69). One shot further back on 147 were John Royles (73, 74) and Gary Owen (75, 72).
