In last month's edition of the paper we featured an article on young Gareth Shepphard. He was one of the unlucky juniors who didn't quite manage to make the finals of the Junior Wales Open.

Ryder Cup Wales Junior/Adult Foursomes event

In 2008 to recognise Wales' great achievement in securing the right to host the 2010 Ryder Cup Wales, clubs are invited to enter the Golf Development/Ryder Cup Wales Junior/Adult Stableford foursomes competition. The event is designed to bring the adult and junior members together on a sociable occasion, coupled with a friendly but enjoyable competition.

Ben Enoch (Truro) continued his excellent early season form by winning the Central Wales Boys by a single stroke from Llanwern's James Zanotti. Enoch collects 50 points while Zanotti collects 30 points. Enoch scored 77 at Borth & Ynyslas and followed up with a 70 at Aberystwyth while Zanotti was round in 75 and 73.

The Gwent Team Stableford (Dewstow Golf Club) that was held in late January resulted in Gwent u14s with 273 pts winning the event. In second place was Gwent u16s (270 pts) and in third Gwent Golf Union Academy also with 270 pts. The top five individual places went to: 1st - Joshua Davies (Dewstow)- 14s (44 points); 2nd - David Morgan (Pontnewydd) - ACA (42 points); 3rd - Josh Heseltine-Smith (Celtic Manor) - 14s (38 points); 4th - Daniel King (Newport) - 14s (36 points) and 5th - Rhys West (Alice Springs) - 16s (36 points). The Gwent under 14s played against Filton Academy at the Bristol Golf Club in late February and won the match by 5 to 4. The full results are as follows (Gwent names first):- 1 - Alex Price (Llanwern) (Capt) halved with Alex Kerr (Dewstow) 2 - Nathan Humphreys (Pontypool) lost to Alex Kerr (Dewstow) 2+1 3 - Otto Mand (Dewstow) beat Lewis Poulton-Sadler 4+2 4 - Oliver Mottram (Dewstow) beat Tom Quinn 1up 5 - Josh Heseltine-Smith (Celtic Manor) beat Ian Steele 1up 6 - Joel Channing (Parc) beat Lizzie Stephens 3up 7 - Ben McDonagh (Parc) lost to Zac Shelford 5+4 8 - Joseph du Feu (Dewstow) lost to Aston Whittle 3+1 9 - Daniel Webb (Dewstow) lost to Toby Hunt (St. Mellons) 7+6 10 - Haydn Darke (Parc) beat Matt Aston (Dewstow) 4+3 Gwent u16s v Filton College 'Elite' was played at the Players Club where some tough matches took place. The eventually result was a halved match. The results are as follows (Gwent names first):- 1 - Julian Sansom (Newport) lost to Adrian Cunningham (Pontnewydd) 4+2 2 - Jordan McCarthy (Newport) beat Luke Sandford (Dewstow) 1up 3 - Daniel Gizzi (Newport) (Capt) beat Sam Morgan 7+5 4 - Luke Ralph (Wernddu) lost to Ashley Mansell 3+2 5 - James Munday (St. Pierre) lost to Louis Ruff 4+3 6 - Andrew Harris (Dewstow) lost to Stuart Hardy 3+1 7 - David Morgan (Pontnewydd) lost to Rhys Briscoe (Dewstow) 5+3 8 - Robert Smith (Parc) beat Sean Sibley 3+2 9 - Rhys West (Alice Springs) beat Liam Eley (St. Mellons) 6+4 10 - Chris Aston (Dewstow) beat Ben Rogers (Pontypool) 4+3 There have been several other matches during the past few months. Joseph Francis is 13 years old and is a member of both Llantrisant & Pontyclun and the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Clubs. He recently qualified for the Wales Junior Open finals which it to be held at the Celtic Manor in August with a remarkable score of 72, just 1 over par, at St Pierre Golf Club.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones recently visited Rhondda Golf Club to give his support to a grassroots golfing project, aimed at encouraging beginners, which has been granted in principle' support to the tune of £70,000.

Welsh golfer Sion Bebb has given the thumbs up to a new project which is designed to help produce the nation's next generation of players Golf Development Wales is hoping that its new brainchild - a CD Rom aimed at spelling out best practice in areas such as developing robust junior club structures, competition formats and volunteer recruitment and education - will ensure that more juniors take to the fairways than ever before.

A Rules & Etiquette day was recently held at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Arranged by the county's current Captain, Ros Cooper and Junior Organiser, Ceri-Ann Morgan, it was a splendid day where 48 girls (aged 7-13) from ten clubs were treated to an excellent programme.

The juniors from Carmarthen Golf Club have just returned from La Manga, Spain after representing Wales at the Inter Club Junior Golf Team Home Internationals.
