Glamorgan junior girls meet at Royal Porthcawl

| Glamorgan juniors girls being given tips from Peter Evans |
A Rules & Etiquette day was recently held at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Arranged by the county's current Captain, Ros Cooper and Junior Organiser, Ceri-Ann Morgan, it was a splendid day where 48 girls (aged 7-13) from ten clubs were treated to an excellent programme.
The girls were welcomed to the club and the morning started with instruction from Royal Porthcawl's Professional Peter Evans. At the practice ground Peter demonstrated some of the rudiments of golf beginning with the importance of the correct hand positions when using different clubs. The need for balance was emphasised when he gave them tips on fairway, bunker and putting shots. Care of the course and, in particular, the greens featured at the conclusion of his coaching session. Each girl was presented with a pitch mark repairer.
After a short break Jane Brown, the county's Vice Captain, explained the main basic rules and etiquette expected when playing on the course. Jane also explained the principal rule changes for 2008 along with the importance of always carrying a rule- book in ones bag. She emphasised that if the girls adhered to this advice they would have safer and more enjoyable rounds of golf.
The girls were then separated into teams and competed in a picture quiz and word search to round off the morning. This generated quite a bit of banter and friendly rivalry. Lunch then followed and final words from the Captain summed up the day.
This was a light-hearted day where the girls met other aspiring golfers from different clubs and, hopefully, forged friendships that will stand them in good stead for many years to come.
