Gower predicts best season so far
This will be the biggest and best season so far for the Gower Golf Club - that's the prediction from proprietor Adrian Richards, as the club enters its 10th year as an 18-hole course.
The home to the Gower Gauntlet order of merit tournament, the club is now designated as a Welsh Golfing Union Championship venue for 2007, and has two further major events on its calendar for this year.
Wales' newest pro tour - the Dragon Tour - returns for the West Wales Open on 11 & 12 June - a 36-hole tournament which will be the second event on the extended 2007 tour.
Later in the summer, the professionals of the future will take part in the Welsh Boys Inter-counties Championship, which the Gower hosts for the first time on 31 August.
The club has grown from a modest nine-hole course in 1995 to an impressive venue with an 18-hole Donald Steel-designed course, four-star accommodation, the acclaimed Beacons restaurant, modern spacious changing facilities and a golfers' lounge.
"Hosting events like these is an indication of how far we have come," said club proprietor Adrian Richards. "It's a real vote of confidence in a relatively new club to be awarded a Welsh Golfing Union event, especially when most tournaments are confined to links courses. It's a testament to Donald Steel's course, which offers a range of natural hazards which are a challenge to golfers of all standards. The course has now settled down and the greens are providing fast-running surfaces that these premier players expect. We had some very favourable comments from some of the Dragon Tour players last year - several of whom have played on the Euro Pro and European Challenge tours. It looks sure to be our biggest and best season so far."
